Books to get you hot and bothered

Tonight my friend Maureen emailed me a link to this call for submissions for a Globe and Mail article on the best romantic or steamy book. Some of the classics like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Jane Eyreand Wuthering Heightshave already been suggested but with Valentine’s Day right around the corner I thought I would take my own informal poll of my readers.

My choice

I’m sure you’ll be able to guess my choice for most romantic book, it’s not a secret that I have a crazy book crush on Pride and Prejudice. I love everything about the romances in this book. Jane and Bingley have a sweet and immediate connection – you could almost say it’s love at first sight (which of course is a secret fantasy of every woman). Who doesn’t want a handsome, rich and eligible bachelor to be infatuated with her from the start?

Elizabeth and Darcy on the other hand have a much more tumultuous courtship that is equally romantic. Darcy’s arrogance and hurtful comments about Elizabeth’s appearance and circumstances created a gulf between them he had to bridge with some of the most romantic gestures I’ve ever read. His proposals still make my heart skip a beat!

  1. While I agree with you about P&P, I have to put in my vote for ‘Persuasion.’ Does it get any steamier than when Capt. Wentworth asks if Anne would have had him if he had written sooner and she responds affirmatively? Plus, I love the fact that Mary is put in her place once more.

    • Alright, I haven’t read Persuasion yet and I’m pretty sure this is the second time you’ve mentioned it so I should probably remedy that soon. Having read the Goodreads synopsis it looks like it’s going to be right up my alley. I’m hoping to sneak it in as a bonus book this month or next. Thanks for the recommendation!

  2. P&P was, for such a long time, the love of my life until I had my own love at first sight moment. It’s my go to book, my fall back on a bad day. For a long time I slept with it under my pillow. I loved Emma when I needed a friend who was motherless too and I needed Persuasion before I knew what love felt like and wanted to recognise it when it came. I adore seeing others who love P&P as much as I do, but I admit, when it goes to Austen, I’m a total polygamist.

    • It sounds like I need to read much more Austen! I haven’t read Emma because I watch the Gwenyth Paltrow film adaptation and did not enjoy it which put me off the book. I’ve added Persuasion and Emma to my TBR list and will fit them in between required reading for the A to Z challenge.
